Borrowdale Hotel

Wine of the Month from Lake District Hotels Master Sommelier …

Each month our very own Master Sommelier, Stephen Wilcock will describe two new Wines that he thinks are perfect for the time of year.

These wines can be found in Borrowdale Hotel wine cellar and tasting room which glass fronted doors that entice you in from the dining room. The cellar beautifully displays the wine and champagne collection in rich wooden racking that’s skilfully lit to highlight key bottles.

The first one is a Rosé Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. Its made from the Merlot grape variety by Kate Radburnd . With a colour of strawberries and a smell of fresh berries, nettles this is a refreshing classy wine. The ripe Merlot fruit was crushed and pressed and the skins left in contact with the wine with just enough time to give a delicate rose coloured juice and strawberry fruits and some spice notes on the palate.

The second wine is Alto Pampas del Sur Pinot Noir, Mendoza, 2010. This intense ruby red Pinot Noir displays floral notes, especially violets and wild roses, and has a fresh and young palate. The Pinot noir is the great red grape from Burgundy, but this wine from the Mendoza in Argentina. It produces a very fruity plumy wine, full of fruit and not too heavy Perfect to accompany beef and lamb dishes that do not have to much spice and just nice on its own. Very very drinkable.

Torres Wine Evening at the Borrowdale Hotel …

It was a full house for the Torres Wine Evening at the Borrowdale Hotel on Friday 4th March.

Stephen Wilcock Master sommelier invited Gabriel Fernandez from Torres Chile to The Borrowdale Hotel .

A Santa Digna Cabernet Sauvignon rose as an aperitif was followed by Sauvignon blanc with the Sea bass a Gewürztraminer with the soup and Manso de Valasco with the Pork .

To finish a late Harvest Riesling which was barley sugar and honey on the nose.

We were entertained by Gabriel and Stephen and informed about phyloxera, rootstocks and the History of Chile

Spring romance at Lake District Hotels

Fells aflutter with bluebells, hosts of golden daffodils, where could be more romantic than the Lake District in spring. Poets and princes alike love Lakeland for its inspiration and natural beauty – making it the perfect place for a break.

The Lake District Hotel Group provides a unique selection of six family owned hotels in the Lake District from a traditional coaching inn to luxury lakeshore hotels. Each offers fine cuisine, excellent facilities and the warmest Lake District welcome.

Drive along the shores of Ullswater and soak up the scenery before enjoying a quintessentially English afternoon tea at ‘Inn on the Lake’. Travel to the Borrowdale Valley to climb Cat Bells made famous by the Tales of Miss Tiggywinkle, then stop for a bar meal and taste of real ale at the Borrowdale Hotel.

Keswick is England’s walking capitol, with a host of ‘Wainwrights’ on the doorstep and is still a favourite for the less energetic with Victorian parks and lakeside ambles.  Central to life in this pretty market town is the Skiddaw Hotel, perfectly located and serving delicious food all day – like the Bradder’s Brunch made famous by Julia Bradbury.  Next door is the Kings Arms, a 17th century coaching inn that has welcomed visitors with a great pint and hearty food for over 400 years. It would be hard to find anywhere more welcoming.

Local producers are key - Food is a very important ingredient to life in the lakes and the chefs at Lake District Hotels firmly believe in the ‘buy local, cook local’ ethos. You are guaranteed to be served the best that Lakeland Producers have to offer, whether fine dining in the Lake View restaurant at the Lodore Falls Hotel, or taking lunch in the lounge of Penrith’s historic George Hotel

National Trust walk in Borrowdale, Lake District

Borrowdale is one of the slightly less well known gems of the English Lake District which gives some of the best views of any walk.

This full details of this walk are published by the Daily Mail and created by Steve Armstrong, a National Trust seasonal ranger, so you know you’re in expert hands.

For those unfamiliar with the area, Borrowdale is a valley in the Northern Lake District with Keswick & Derwent Water at one end and Honister Pass leading to Buttermere at the other.

Being slightly away from the central Lake District towns such as Windermere and Ambleside, Borrowdale has always enjoyed a more relaxing and less cluttered feel even in the middle of Summer, although that’s not to say Borrowdale is exactly quiet in June and July.

The area has been popular with walkers for generations, with more gentle slopes and rewarding views across the northern lakes plus there are several attractions on the way up the valley including the The Bowder Stone – a giant stone deposited as the the last Ice Age glaciers retreated and very popular with kids.

If you research Borrowdale you might discover that Seathwaite at the top of the valley is statistically the wettest place in Britain. However having spent a vast amount of time in the area, I can say I’ve never seen it rain in Borrowdale yet, so maybe it all falls only on the rain gauge?

For full details including maps of the walk – see the Daily Mail Borrowdale Walk web page

Learn about winemaking in Chile were the excellent climatic conditions make it ideal to grow vines. Chile has well differentiated seasons with spectacular temperature shifts, greater even than 20ºC. Also the absence of Phylloxera means that it is not necessary to graft vines onto American rootstock finally the oldest viticultural traditions on the American continent. Spanish missionaries planted the first vineyards. Later, in the 19th century they were re-planted with French varietals.
