New Head Chef with flair and passion at the Borrowdale Hotel …

We are pleased to introduce Nigel Harper our new Head Chef – he has set his sights on a rosette for the Borrowdale Hotel restaurant. Nigel has spent many years developing his skills just down the road at the Lodore Falls Hotel under the tutelage of Head Chef Mike Ward. It is very rewarding to see someone progress so well. 

Nigel has developed a real passion for traditional English dishes with a creative twist, and the restaurant’s famous carving trolley, local cheeseboard and unique silver service are still key favorites. Hosting the prestigious Cumbria Life Dining Club last month Nigel excelled and local celebrity chef John Crouch concluded “The dishes were very flavorsome because Nigel’s menu let those flavours shine – everyone really enjoyed it. He is a skilled young chef with a great potential.”

Head Chef is a radio superstar

Head Chef Mike Ward first appeared on BBC Radio Cumbria to talk about the monthly Pudding Evenings held at the Lodore Falls Hotel. If you are a pudding lover, the second Thursday every month is just the night to have dinner in the restaurant – there are seven delicious puddings to choose from! 

Following his first appearance Mike built up quite a listener fan base and has a monthly pudding slot on the morning show. His choice of pudding is interesting and he always picks one that his audience will be able to make at home.

Friday night is wine tasting night at the Borrowdale Hotel …

If you are staying a few days, be sure to include a Friday night – that way you will be treated to a complementary wine tasting before dinner. Stephen Wilcock, the General Manager, is one of only 25 Master Sommeliers in Europe – he delights in helping diners choose the wine best suited to their palette and the dishes selected. With over 200 wines and champagnes in the superb new wine cellar, there’s plenty to choose from.

500,000 pizza’s later….

For more than 25 years the Loose Box Pizzeria in the Kings Arms Courtyard in Keswick has been the place for homemade pizza and pasta. Head Chef Alan Stevenson, (who has been there from day one) reckons he has cooked over ½ million pizzas for locals and tourists.

The restaurant has recently opened after a total refurbishment at a cost of more than £200,000 and newly named LB’s Pizza House has now opened – with a totally new style. The open plan kitchen has been extended and a new traditional pizza oven installed. The menu appeals to pizza and pasta lovers, but now also features nibbles, sharing dishes and exciting starters as well as main courses like the famous Veal Milanese and desserts like ‘Banana Mess’ (which must be tried to be believed).  The new décor makes the restaurant light and airy with red leather sofa seating, light oak tables and chairs and fabulous iconic Italian pictures on the walls.

LB’s Pizza House is open daily from 12 – 2.30 pm for lunch and 6 – 10.00 pm (Fri & Sat until 10.30) for dinner. During Summer it is open all day and also serves al fresco in the courtyard.

Dining Club at Borrowdale Hotel …

The Cumbria Life Fine Dining Club visited the Borrowdale Hotel last week and enjoyed a delicious menu prepared by Head Chef Nigel Harper.

The food was perfectly matched with wines selected by General Manager and Master Sommelier Stephen Wilcock. 

Local celebrity chef John Crouch concluded “The dishes were certainly very flavoursome because Nigel’s menu let those flavours shine – everyone really enjoyed it. He is a skilled chef with a great potential.”

Throughout the meal John gave a commentary on each dish, explaining a few interesting facts related to the menu – like  risotto will be cooked 17 minutes after the first wine (or liquid) is added.  Did you know that China is the largest supplier of mushrooms? Or that salary is derived from salt which was how people were paid in the roman era?

John also brought an unusual object – a biscuit docker – it puts the little holes in water biscuits. Did you know that Carr’s Biscuit factory in Carlisle was granted its Royal Warrant in 1841 – that was just ten years after the factory was opened!
