Lakeside lunch with Cumbria Life

The Inn on the Lake at Glenridding hosted a Lakeside Luncheon for Cumbria Life earlier this month. The weather was glorious and the cherry trees were in full bloom, welcoming guests as they arrive.

It was a fantastic opportunity for Head Chef Frazer Souter to produce a wonderful Lakeland lunch for these discerning diners. It was great to see people come to the lunch from far and wide – a couple travelled from north of Stirling to stay in the Lakes and attend the luncheon – they loved it and plan to return again to stay at the Inn on the Lake.

Richard Eccles – Editor of Cumbria Life concluded “I can’t think of a better dining room view.”

The menu was accompanied by a different wine with each course, carefully selected by Stephen Wilcock, Master Sommelier for the Lake District Hotel Group and himself, General Manager of the Borrowdale Hotel.

Head Chef Frazer began by saying “We are fortunate to live in the breadbasket of England with so many free range meats and locally grown produce. We are now also landing seafood locally – catching it before it goes abroad.”

Duck egg with Grilled asparagus – eggs from Carlisle and the freshest new season asparagus – two weeks early this year.  The other starter was Crab croquettes – locally caught and beautifully presented.

Main course of spring lamb was accompanied by the most delicious aubergine, tomato and goats cheese tian – I have never before had goats cheese with lamb – but it woks very well.

Frazer told us that there are over 15 different breeds of lamb farmed in the Lake District – this was certainly a very tasty one.

Fish lovers enjoyed the Sea Bream – caught from the Irish seas and landed at Millom.

Dessert was also delightful – a warm rhubarb and ginger crumble melted in the mouth and was followed by home made chocolates and coffee.

On September 14th, the  Inn on the Lake will be playing host to a luncheon and fashion show from Maureen Cookson at Whalley.  Last year tickets for this event sold very quickly – especially with an offer of a free place when you book a table of ten! 500,000 pizza’s later….

For more than 25 years the Loose Box Pizzeria in the Kings Arms Courtyard in Keswick has been the place for homemade pizza and pasta. Head Chef Alan Stevenson, (who has been there from day one) reckons he has cooked over ½ million pizzas for locals and tourists.

The restaurant has recently opened after a total refurbishment at a cost of more than £200,000 and newly named LB’s Pizza House has now opened – with a totally new style. The open plan kitchen has been extended and a new traditional pizza oven installed. The menu appeals to pizza and pasta lovers, but now also features nibbles, sharing dishes and exciting starters as well as main courses like the famous Veal Milanese and desserts like ‘Banana Mess’ (which must be tried to be believed).  The new décor makes the restaurant light and airy with red leather sofa seating, light oak tables and chairs and fabulous iconic Italian pictures on the walls.

LB’s Pizza House is open daily from 12 – 2.30 pm for lunch and 6 – 10.00 pm (Fri & Sat until 10.30) for dinner. During Summer it is open all day and also serves al fresco in the courtyard.

The Lakes TV programme is a hit for Inn on the Lake …

The latest series of The Lakes began last night (Monday 3rd Jan) on ITV and included a feature on a wedding at the Inn on the Lake. Before the programme finished the hotel was inundated with calls and enquiries from ‘brides to be’ wanting to find out more about the garden gazebo weddings. The website too saw a dramatic rise in new enquiries – with three thousand new visitors in the first few hours after the programme went out.

The Lakes programme was following Joe Pester who is an instructor at the Glenridding Sailing School, Joe has also run sailing classes at Inn on the Lake since he moved up to the area. When Joe decided to marry Lindi Jones, he picked the day before the Ullswater Sailing regatta and chose the Inn on the Lake as his venue. ‘The Lakes‘ programme features Gary Wilson, General Manager at the hotel and a great friend of Joes. Gary said “Joe and Lindi wanted an informal outdoor wedding so the gazebo was perfect.”

Anyone interested in finding out more about garden weddings in the gazebo can contact Gary Wilson, General manager at Inn on the Lake on 017684 82444 or visit www.lakedistricthotels.net/innonthelake

Festive musical event at Inn on the Lake …

The Border Concert Band played traditional Christmas carols through lunch and afternoon tea at the Inn on the Lake last Sunday. The restaurant was packed with lunchtime diners who appreciated the music and sang along with the carols. The same was true of the afternoon tea – those listening to the band agreed “It really got them into the sprit of Christmas and the band encouraged everyone to sing along and ask for requests.

It was an event for all ages – there were children aged two dancing in the lounges whilst Grandparents sat and enjoyed the food and music. Abbey and Georgia Barr agreed “it was a very exciting start to Christmas and there was a real festive feel and a great family atmosphere that everyone really enjoyed together.” The Inn on the Lake hopes to make this event part of family Christmas tradition next year, setting the scene for Christmas in Glenridding.

“There were 20 members of the Border Concert Band who travelled from Carlisle to play at the event. This is the second time this year that they have featured at Inn on the Lake and they are certainly welcome to come back any time” said General Manager Gary Wilson.
