Head Chef is a radio superstar

Head Chef Mike Ward first appeared on BBC Radio Cumbria to talk about the monthly Pudding Evenings held at the Lodore Falls Hotel. If you are a pudding lover, the second Thursday every month is just the night to have dinner in the restaurant – there are seven delicious puddings to choose from!

Following his first appearance Mike built up quite a listener fan base and has a monthly pudding slot on the morning show. His choice of pudding is interesting and he always picks one that his audience will be able to make at home.

Children have a ball at the Cinderella panto …

What fantastic fun at the Lodore Falls Hotel in Borrowdale on Tuesday afternoon as 170 visitors packed the Garden Rooms for the Christmas panto – Cinderella. With beautiful ballet dresses decking the halls, the scene was quite magical for the children and parents. With cushions scattered on the floor at the front of th4 stage, there were over 80 children screaming and shouting with laughter at Buttons and the ugly sisters.

The interval was timed to perfection, with food and drinks pre-ordered before the performance giving time for the youngsters to refuel before the second half of the show. As the performance came to an end, the children got closer and closer and closer to the actors – totally involved in what was happening and leaving Mums and Grandparents just as spellbound watching their little ones.

“The best panto we’ve seen this year” agreed several local families who had travelled to see others in the area. So much effort from Chaplin’s – the professional troupe who performed for us – a huge thanks to them. One thing is for sure, with almost double attendance on last years first ever panto, we are certainly going to make this an annual event. Roll on next Christmas.

Festive musical event at Inn on the Lake …

The Border Concert Band played traditional Christmas carols through lunch and afternoon tea at the Inn on the Lake last Sunday. The restaurant was packed with lunchtime diners who appreciated the music and sang along with the carols. The same was true of the afternoon tea – those listening to the band agreed “It really got them into the sprit of Christmas and the band encouraged everyone to sing along and ask for requests.

It was an event for all ages – there were children aged two dancing in the lounges whilst Grandparents sat and enjoyed the food and music. Abbey and Georgia Barr agreed “it was a very exciting start to Christmas and there was a real festive feel and a great family atmosphere that everyone really enjoyed together.” The Inn on the Lake hopes to make this event part of family Christmas tradition next year, setting the scene for Christmas in Glenridding.

“There were 20 members of the Border Concert Band who travelled from Carlisle to play at the event. This is the second time this year that they have featured at Inn on the Lake and they are certainly welcome to come back any time” said General Manager Gary Wilson.

Nutcracker ballet launches Christmas – not a dry eye in the house

A performance of the Nutcracker ballet and a fairytale afternoon tea heralded the arrival of Christmas at the Lodore Falls Hotel on Sunday (21st Nov). The hotel, which has taken the Nutcracker theme this year was packed guests wanting to see the first ever ‘Lodore’ ballet production.

Over 170 guests saw dancers from the Starkey School of Theatre Dance in Whitehaven, perform a short version of the Nutcracker Ballet. Aged 9 – 24 the dancers put on a performance that was truly professional and there was hardly a dry eye in the house as parents, grandparents and regular customers were captivated as they watched and listened to the story unfold.

With numerous costume changes and a cast of 30, the enormous amount of preparation was clearly evident and pure enjoyment was plain to see on the faces of the dancers.

Guests were very impressed at the attention to detail given to the hotel décor, the ballet production and the themed link to the afternoon tea with chocolate mice and snow cakes. Mrs Sheila Bewsher from Whitehaven watched Grandson Thomas take part, she said “the hotel looks fantastic with tutu’s masks and ballet shoes; it set the scene for the ballet. It couldn’t have been a more perfect start to Christmas.”

Joyce Hill from Brampton said “it was an enchanting afternoon, something different and a wonderful way to enjoy afternoon tea. The ballet was lovely and the food was fabulous.”

Karen Starkey, Director of the production said “it has been a wonderful experience to create a ballet in such lovely surroundings – it is the perfect location for this Christmas fairytale. The dancers have loved every minute and really appreciated the opportunity to put on the show. The hotel was great to work with and we are already talking about what we can do next.”

Stephen Johnson, General Manager of the hotel said “It was lovely to get such fantastic comments from our regular guests as well as seeing new people experience the magic of our hotel for the first time.”

The idea to create a real first in Cumbria with a Nutcracker theme came from Kit Graves, Hotel Director, who saw a stunning Nutcracker display in Denmark’s ‘Royal Copenhagen Flagship store’ last Christmas. Work started on the 2010 Christmas Nutcracker story very early in the year and has culminated in a fantastic Nutcracker Christmas display. Not to be out done, Head Chef Mike Ward has also created a menu of Russian inspired dishes including Borscht (Beetroot Soup) Kiev’s and Sugar Plum Fairy cake. There are also Russian Cocktails too, like the Ballet Russe, the Moscow Mule and the Russian Quaalude.
