We’re delighted to welcome you to the Borrowdale hotel to experience how relaxing and enjoyable a traditional Christmas can be. New and returning guests will enjoy the festive atmosphere created by the glittering trees, lights and decorations throughout the hotel.
Renowned for our warm hospitality, excellent wines and cuisine, our aim is to make your festive break a magical occasion for you to share with family and friends both old and new.
Arrive at the hotel this afternoon to the lovely aroma of mulled wine and mince pies being served in the lounges in front of the roaring fires. In the evening, we gather in the lounge bar for a pre-dinner cocktail and canapés reception and meet our General Manager and his team, as he takes the opportunity to tell you about the coming day’s events and entertainment.
The Borrowdale carol singers will visit during the early evening to get us in the Christmas mood before making your way into the restaurant where an exquisite welcome dinner will be prepared by the Head Chef and his team.
After dinner it’s time to head outside to enjoy a glass of hot punch and roasted chestnuts round the chimenea as you experience the peace and tranquillity of the Borrowdale valley at night.
Start your day with a traditional Cumbrian breakfast and a little bit of sparkle with a glass of Bucks Fizz. Relax and enjoy your morning before taking a stroll to the lake or visit our sister hotel’s leisure club for a swim in the indoor pool. After the Lakeland air has stimulated your appetite it will be time to meet in the lounges, where orders will be taken for a sumptuous 5 course Christmas Day lunch. Make sure you leave room for coffee and Christmas cake before settling down for the Queen’s speech at 3pm.
In the evening the bar is open for pre-dinner drinks and the fabulous ‘Taste of the Lakes and Fells’ buffet will be served, providing a perfect opportunity for you to taste some traditional Cumbrian specialties and delicacies. With relaxation in mind we have prepared a fun Christmas quiz to round off the day, with prizes to be won.
A true Cumbrian breakfast will be served to get you going for the day ahead. Weather permitting; a guided walk will set off from the hotel to a spectacular location shortly after breakfast. (Suitable clothing and footwear advised!)
Wrap up warm if you wish to enjoy a cruise on Lake Derwentwater and experience the comfortable ‘Lady of the Lakes’ launch, whilst taking in the breath-taking scenery and a warming mulled wine.
A light afternoon tea buffet of scones, homemade jam and clotted cream accompanied by lashings of tea will be served on your return. Sink into one of our comfortable chairs and take some time to relax in the lounges. Soon it will be time to change and get ready for the magnificent 4 course Boxing Day dinner which is followed by our resident DJ and dancing till midnight.
For those of our guests who leave us today, we bid you a fond farewell and trust you have enjoyed a fantastic Christmas with us.

Christmas and New Year celebrations form such a special season at our hotels, and we are delighted to welcome many of our guests back year after year.
Have just spent 3 nights over Christmas at this hotel and really didn't want to come home! Wonderful service...fantastic atmosphere... amazing staff. ... fabulous food!. Thank you to each member of "The Team" for a Christmas we will never forget. Can't wait for next year. L Warrington, York
I first came across the Borrowdale Hotel nearly 30 years ago and since then I have spent nearly 30 Christmasses here, with many other visits in between, always enjoying the outstanding Borrowdale Hotel.
Food, drink and service in the restaurant and bar are invariably excellent, and members of staff are friendly and in time some become regarded as personal friends. I have spent many hours at Christmas beside the log fires in the lounges, or in the summer in the pleasant garden, or watching the birds on the terrace from a conservatory window.
Countless guests return time and time again, and sometimes even form lasting friendships with others. Surely this indeed speaks for itself. M Heseltine, Richmond
