One of the great privileges of running a business is being able to give generously to deserving causes. Towards the end of 2016 we put the vote to the general public to help nominate a Cumbrian charity, and we received over 600 votes. From this we are pleased to announce that Blood Bikes Cumbria have been selected as our chosen charity for 2017.
Blood Bikes Cumbria, is part of a nationwide organization that provides out-of-hours transport, 365 days of the year to transfer urgently needed blood, drugs, human tissue and other medical requirements between hospitals and blood transfusion banks. They also supply the Great North Air Ambulance with fresh blood, every day of the week (regardless of weather conditions). The charity was set up to save the NHS money which was being spent using public taxi services to provide this service.
Rod Wickham, Rider & Liaison Officer for Blood Bikes Cumbria, commented, “We are delighted to have been chosen by Lake District Hotels as their charity of the year. Our riders, drivers, controllers and fundraisers work together to provide this vital service for the people of Cumbria. To have the support from the Lake District Hotels group will give a huge boost to the morale of our volunteers and also much needed funds to allow us to continue. We look forward to working together during the year."
The Cumbrian area is 1 of the 48 groups within the organisation and is made up of a team of 90 volunteers, 7 bikes and 4 cars, who run independently following the National Association of Blood Bikes guide lines. All riders are required to have an advanced motorcycle riding qualification, car drivers require an advanced driving qualification, any new riders and drivers must shadow an experienced member and are only allowed to work on their own when they fully understand the procedures and their mentor is satisfied.
Money raised by Lake District Hotels since 1st January 2017.
