Cumbria - the Lake District is spoilt
for choice when it comes to high quality golf courses, most
of which offer stunning views across lakeland coutryside.
The closest golf course to the Inn on the Lake is Keswick
Golf Club at Threlkeld Hall, which is about a fifteen minute
drive away. This challenging, par 71 course sits on Threlkeld
Common and offers scenic, panoramic views of Blencathra, one
of England's highest mountains.
Silloth-on-Solway is of championship course
standard and during 2004 it was voted 24th place in Golf Monthly's
review of Britain and Irelands top courses, just in front
of Royal Troon Golf Club (25th place). They comment that "Carding
a good score is a true test of nerve and industry on this
intriguing layout".
Eskdale
Golf Club is a parkland course with stunning views of
Scafell Pike and the neighbouring fells visable from every
fairway. Their signature hole is the 151 yard Par 3 14th.
An elevated tee looks toward an "island" green set
within a vast trout pond.
Other courses of note include Windermere
Golf Club (35 minutes drive), Kendal
Golf Club (40 minutes drive), Appleby
Golf Club (40 minutes) and Maryport Golf Club (1 hour
away).
Clubs can be hired at most of these courses.
Booking essential. Non-handicappers, can pay and play at Kirkby
Stephen Golf Club, or Beckside Golf Course in Crook, near
Kendal, or at Carus
Green Golf Club on Burneside Road in Kendal.
For those looking to practice their short game the Inn on
the Lake has its own 9 hole pitch and putt course on site.
Use of this course is free to guests of the hotel. For non-residents
the cost is £3.50 per person. Putters, wedges and balls
are provided.
