New look, new chef, new Skiddaw
For the Skiddaw Hotel, the new year truly did start with a bang as we began an entire ground floor refurbishment to transform the traditional into the contemporary.
We’re absolutely delighted to announce that our Skiddaw Hotel renovation has now come to a completion and our snazzy, new look has been met with wide acclaim from visitors both near and far. We’re overwhelmed by the positive reception we have received and feel excited to see what the future holds.
The Keswick town-centre hotel first came into existence all the way back in 1869, and since then has seen different names, owners and countless guests through its doors. Always remaining a popular pit stop with Lake District tourists, the Skiddaw Hotel’s reputation precedes itself and it’s been an honour to give this fan favourite hotel a modern makeover to offer our guests an even more enjoyable experience.
The atmospheric hotel became part of the Lake District Hotels group in 1995, and 2020 marked the introduction of a completely new Skiddaw Hotel.
Let’s take a look…
Traditional from the outside, step indoors to a completely transformed interior which has stylishly modernised the look of the hotel, with a more contemporary demeanour. The refurbishment includes the conservatory, bar, reception, restaurant and function room.
“The new style of the Skiddaw Hotel, gives an updated yet classic lift, combining contemporary with a traditional elegant style and maintaining favourite features. It’s important that the hotel remains a favourite place for our regular customers to drink and dine and for our loyal guests to return to and be wowed by the new look.” – Dani Hope, Lake District Hotels Director
Throughout the hotel, you’ll find custom made carpets, tailored to suit the colours and textures of each room. The main entrance has been restyled with new doors, designed to fill the reception with natural light.
Pewter and Champagne coloured geometric designs feature on the walls, while the reception desk has been replaced with an American black walnut desk with brass detailing, making the space feel open and bright.
The bar lounge has been designed to feel comfortable and warm, featuring splashes of golds, Champagne and mink velvet, while the original photos have been retained and rehung in clusters, forming little pockets of interest.
The connecting conservatory is intended as a show stopper, with Sanderson, ochre and gold botanical wallpaper and feature lights, designed to draw attention from Keswick’s Market Square. Hand finished chairs imported from the Netherlands provide the perfect spot to enjoy the hotels new ‘Hikers Picnic Afternoon Board’, whilst watching the world pass by.
The ‘Hikers Picnic Afternoon Board’ is our modern, gastronomic twist on the traditional afternoon tea, complete with mini beef sliders, halloumi fries, dinky pork pies, homemade cheese scones plus more. The board is priced at £31.95 for 2 people to share.
The dining room is the heart and soul of any hotel, as the place where guests start and end each day, it’s the hub of the overall guest experience and this is no exception for the new Skiddaw Hotel.
To further enhance guest experience, we’ve employed a new Head Chef, Robert Fillingham, who is highly experienced in designing intuitive menus that ignite guests’ passion for great food. Using only the best local ingredients that deliver a burst of fine flavours with each bite, the new menu provides an authentically Cumbrian dining experience unlike any other in Keswick.
We figured that a new Lake District dining experience deserved a worthy title, so we made the choice to rename that restaurant ‘Brasserie 31’. The light & airy restaurant gives a whole new meaning to the term ‘dine in style’, with its feature wall made up of handmade, antique mirror tiles set in timber panels and its seating booths covered in plush green Monte & Jardin Jacquard velvet.
