Mark Harris, Executive Head Chef for Lake District Hotels Ltd will take on the Fred Whitton challenge this Sunday (7th May). This will be Mark’s third time of tackling this gruelling 112 mile bike ride around the Lake District, starting in Grasmere, the route includes the climbs of Kirkstone, Honister, Newlands, Whinlatter, Hardknott & Wrynose passes.
The Fred Whitton is something of a classic in the sporting calendar, set up in honour of the late Fred Whitton who was a great advocate for cycle sport in Cumbria and North Lancashire. Mark hopes to beat his personal best of seven hours and 49 minutes; commenting, “the ride is a real challenge but so worth the effort, you get a real sense of achievement when you cross that finish line.”
Mark is relatively new to his role as Executive Head Chef, but he’s certainly not new to Lake District Hotels Ltd. We like to promote from within and Mark started working at the Inn on the Lake in February 2015 as Head Chef before progressing to the groups Executive Head Chef position early this year.
Mark has worked in some of the world’s finest hotels and restaurants, including the 2* Michelin La Gavroche, 1 Michelin star Capital Hotel in London, Le-Meridien Hotel in Brussels and Seegar’s in Atlanta. Outside of work, Mark can often be found cycling and training for triathlon’s, his love of the outdoors and the Lakes was one of the attractions for moving to the Lake District.
