From Stinky Pigs to Farmers Feasts – Charity Sandwich

After the success of our charity sandwich competition in 2018, which raised an impressive £844 for Keswick School with the winning ‘Stinky Pig’ sandwich; we have launched the competition for a second time.

To enter our sandwich competition, students from Keswick School were asked to submit their sandwich recipe, to include the type of bread, fillings, side salad, condiments and whether it is served hot or cold. With the lucky winner receiving a £30 iTunes voucher, as well as being invited together with three friends to enjoy their creation in one of the following hotels; Lodore Falls Hotel & Spa or Borrowdale Hotel in the Borrowdale valley; the Skiddaw Hotel, the Kings Arms Hotel or the Inn on the Square in Keswick or the Inn on the Lake in Ullswater.

The Winner…

12-year-old Beth Payton with her ‘Farmer’s Feast’ sandwich which includes crispy, streaky bacon, creamy goat’s cheese and caramelised red onion chutney, served on a lightly toasted multigrain farmhouse bread, with a pot of lightly salted root vegetable crisps.

Hear from Beth…

“My Grandparents used to own Martins Bakery in Cockermouth, so I’ve grown up around baking. On a recent visit to the Lodore Falls Hotel & Spa I saw last year’s sandwich winner on the menu and hoped they would run the competition again, so when the teacher announced it in class, I started thinking about what I could make.”

“I wanted to include something that my own family would like; my Mum likes goats’ cheese, my Dad likes chutney and I love crispy bacon, so I put them all together and it tasted great. Then I started thinking about the name, as all the ingredients came from farm animals, I came up with ‘Farmer’s Feast’.”

‘Farmer’s Feast’ will be on sale in the six Lake District Hotels from April to October and 50p from each sale going towards upgrading the food technology facilities at Keswick School.
