Lake District Hotels are supporting the Scouts!

Each year for the past four years, we have asked the public to nominate a local charity of the year that is in need of some extra help. From this, we have then dedicated our time to help fundraise for that chosen Charity of the Year, so they can reap the benefits from this additional support.

Well… we asked you for nominations and your suggestions have been listened to! We’re incredibly pleased to announce that our fundraising efforts from now on will be in aid of the Keswick Scouts. The purpose of our fundraising is to aid the refurbishment of Ashness Hut that is desperately in need of a lick of paint (plus everything else!)

CHARITY OF THE YEAR →

Ashness Hut was donated to Keswick Scouts, along with the land which it sits on just over 70 years ago. Its initial purpose was to provide a cost-effective place to stay for former evacuees and other under privileged post war children. Today it is used as part of a varied programme of activities undertaken by 93 young scouts.

“We are excited to help towards the refurbishment of Ashness Hut, which we hope will make a real difference to Keswick Scouts. We feel very privileged to be in a position where we can contribute towards helping a local charity such as this continue into the future.” – Dani Hope, Lake District Hotels Director

Keswick Scouts: helping to develop skills for life

Keswick Scouts has been providing adventure, opportunity and life skills to young people for almost 110 years, and it can’t happen without support from the local and wider community, through the many volunteers who give their time each week or those that provide financial support to ensure the club can continue to provide fun and low cost activities.

“Ashness Hut is a fabulous resource, even though it’s just a few miles outside the town it feels like a world apart. It’s perfect for taking the young people back to nature, be it through fire-lighting, bush craft and outdoor cooking sessions, during the week or multi-day camps where we use the hut as a base to explore the local countryside – some of my favourite memories are of the adventures I had there myself as a scout!” – Jonny Winter, Assistant Scout Leader & Group Watersports Co-ordinator

Fundraising for Keswick Scouts has already begun!

Fundraising for this new Charity of the Year started September 2019 and is running through to March 2020 across our 6 hotels, with many ticketed events being held with the proceeds going toward this cause – so you can help too! Be sure to check our upcoming events calendar so you don’t miss out on some of the excellent events we will be hosting.

Some of our most popular past events have included our annual Royal Ascot Ladies Day, our weekly charity quiz night at the Skiddaw Hotel and other sporadic events we’ve held throughout the year. We have also raised money through other means including a Duck Race, raffle, sandwich making competition and even the sale of ‘Garry’s Hot Nuts’ at The Kings Arms Hotel!

Previous Charity of the Years

We first introduced a Charity of the Year back in 2016, when we raised money for Amy’s Care. Since then, we’ve followed tradition and helped raise money for Blood Bikes Cumbria and Keswick School in the two subsequent years. In total, we raised over £50,000 for the three well-deserving causes. For our previous project, we completely redeveloped the Keswick School Food Technology kitchens into a more modern Great British Bake-off inspired kitchen.
