London’s West End comes to Penrith!
Opera d’Amici are a group of highly experienced singers from companies such as Covent Garden, English National Opera and D’Oyly Carte. The group came together to share their love and passion for what they do and perform in a variety of different venues. After a strong recommendation to Kit Graves, Director of Lake District Hotels from a personal friend, a date was set for Saturday 18th October for Opera d’Amici to perform live at the George Hotel in Penrith.
The singers for the evening were Hannah Kirk – Soprano, John Cunningham – Bass and on the piano Peter Bailey. The programme was a selection of songs and arias from the world’s famous operas and operettas, including many of the following: Les Miserables, Carmen, Phantom of the Opera, South Pacific, Showboat, West Side Story, La traviata, Gianni Schicchi and many more.
Their voices were wonderful as they echoed around the George Hotel’s Grand Ballroom, which proved to be the perfect setting for such an event. The Head Chef had researched the menu carefully to include an Italian twist to match the music. With a choice of three starters and deserts, and four main courses there was certainly plenty to choose from. Featured on the menu were dishes such as; ‘Arancini’ wild mushroom risotto bon bons served with a napolitain sauce for starter. ‘Osso Bucco’ traditional shin of veal stew in a rich tomato herb and saffron sauce to follow, and warm valpolicella poached pears served with vanilla ice cream for desert.
51 guests dined in style and had a fabulous evening as Opera d’ Amici serenaded guests between courses and even danced with a few, ensuring that everyone had a truly fabulous experience! At the end of the evening Opera d’Amici received a standing ovation, with one lady commenting “We were extremely pleased with the care and attention to detail during the whole evening. Entertainment, food and service were first class”
After the event Hannah Kirk, Opera d’Amici Artistic Director commented “We all had a super time, the audience were good fun and Justin (General Manager at the George Hotel, Penrith) and the team looked after us very well! We received very positive comments from the guests and we hope to perform at the George Hotel again in the future”
