Ready, steady cook: Keswick School students get a visit from our Executive Head Chef.
Following the completion and official opening ceremony of the Keswick School Food Technology kitchens, our Executive Head Chef, Mark Harris, paid a visit to Keswick School on Wednesday 9th October to offer guidance and tips on how to make the perfect chicken curry.
The visit followed on from an 18-month project in which we successfully raised £30,000 to transform the food technology room within the school, into a TV style Bake-off kitchen.
Our relationship with Keswick School continues to grow.
With the new kitchen development now complete, the relationship between Lake District Hotels and Keswick School is just beginning, with this cooking demonstration being the first of many.
As well as cooking demonstrations, we are also in talks with Keswick School over introducing students into work experience roles, and apprenticeships within our group.
A helping hand from Mark.
Wednesday’s lesson began with a briefing from the food technology teacher, Mrs Mather, followed by the year 9 students pairing up as they each took to their cooking stations to start prepping.
Mark made his way around each station showing students how to de-seed chillies and gave tips on how to chop onions without making you cry, whilst making it clear to students that it’s important to take your time while cooking.
“You don’t need to spend hours in kitchen to make the perfect curry. It’s important to allow ingredients cook properly, such as onions to get the most flavour out of them. Save the powdered spices until the end, the cooking process reduces the flavour of dried spices so it’s best to wait until you’re almost finished before adding these.” – Mark Harris, Lake District Hotels’ Executive Head Chef

Live footage from the curry cookery class was shown on ITV Border on Wednesday 16th October 2019, along with interviews over the new kitchen with the Head Teacher, year 8 students Rebecca Young and Issy Green, as well as Lake District Hotels Director, Kit Graves. Watch the footage on catch-up now.
