‘Stinky Pig’ crowned sandwich winner


Students from Keswick School proved they had excellent taste when it came to submitting their sandwich recipes into our ‘Design a Sandwich’ competition. We have been working closely with Keswick School throughout 2018 to raise funds to improve their food technology kitchen, kick starting our fundraising activities by involving the students in an exclusive competition.

Students were asked to submit their sandwich recipe, to include the type of bread, fillings, side salad, condiments and whether it is served hot or cold. With the lucky winner receiving a £30 iTunes voucher, as well as being invited together with three friends to enjoy their creation in one of our hotels; Lodore Falls Hotel or Borrowdale Hotel in the Borrowdale valley; the Skiddaw Hotel, the Kings Arms Hotel or the Inn on the Square in Keswick; the George Hotel in Penrith or the Inn on the Lake in Ullswater.

The winning sandwich, cleverly concocted by 13-year-old Tom Booth was given the title ‘Stinky Pig’ which includes hot back bacon, Eden valley brie and mango chutney, served on a warm ciabatta with a side salad of rocket, celery and chopped radish with a balsamic vinegar dressing.

Tom said: “I was really surprised to hear that my sandwich had been selected as the winner, I didn’t expect to win, which you can probably tell by the name that I gave to my creation. My idea behind it came from a combination of ingredients which my family enjoy – my Dad and Grandpa love mango chutney, my Mum and Dad are always eating brie, everyone likes bacon and my brother and I prefer the salad.”

Mark Harris, Executive Chef commented “We were thrilled with the enthusiasm and effort that the students put in and would like to thank everyone who took part in the competition. The recipes showed real thought had gone into the appearance, taste and flavour of each sandwich. I have personally tried and tested Tom’s well-put together sandwich design, and it is delicious. The sandwich will now feature on the menu in all seven of our hotels, with 50p from each sale going towards upgrading the food technology facilities at Keswick School. We’re excited to see how our customers enjoy the creation.”

‘Stinky Pig’ will be on sale in the seven Lake District Hotels from April to October and 50p from each sale will go to Keswick School.
