Dressed crab

Join Lake District Hotels and enjoy our delicious summer special, ‘Dressed Crab with pommes frites’… Ready to eat, our dressed crab is the simplest way to enjoy the taste of the seaside without the hassle of cooking and picking the crab yourself.  All you need is a squeeze of lemon and a cold glass of wine to wash it all down!

Crammed full of delicious white and brown meat and prepared to the highest of standards, this is the perfect meal for a sunny Lake District afternoon…  not only is it packed full of flavour, it’s healthy and delicious…

Serving suggestion: Enjoy with pommes frites and a choice of different dressings from our hotels… from roasted garlic & chive aioli, a wild garlic mayonnaise or an aioli dip

Fancy having a go yourself, follow our step by step instructions;   

1.
Place the crab on its back onto a large chopping board and remove the tail flap, legs and claws.

2.
Carefully push a sharp knife between the shell and the body of the crab, twist and the shell will open.

3.
Inside you will see the ‘dead man’s fingers’ (pale white spongy gills) which must be removed. Also remove the stomach sac and hard membranes inside the shell.

4.
Using a teaspoon scoop out the brown meat, place in a bowl and mash gently with a fork.
Remove the white meat. Keep to one side.

5.
Crack each of the legs and claws and pick out all the meat. Once removed check through the meat to make sure there are no splinters of shell.

6.
Return the brown meat to the centre of the shell and the white meat to each side.

7.
Serve with a dressing of your choice
