On Monday 25th July, a group of 21 Ukrainian refugees (including 13 children) received a warm, Cumbrian welcome when they visited Ullswater for a familiarization event which included a complimentary afternoon tea at the 4-star Inn on the Lake in Glenridding; provided on behalf of Lake District Hotels.
Noted as one of the best afternoon teas in the Lake District according to TripAdvisor reviews, refugees had the opportunity to sample a selection of Cumbrian-inspired delicacies including: Kendal Mint Cheesecake, Ullswater Sticky Toffee Battenburg, Cumbrian Tea Loaf with Lakes Distillery Whisky Butter and Cumberland Sausage Rolls to name a few.
“It was a pleasure to host the group of refugees and offer them afternoon tea in light of everything they have been through over the past few months There were lots of empty afternoon tea stands and happy faces so I think the offering went down well!” – Gary Wilson, General Manager of Inn on the Lake
The Ukrainian group, who are all currently living with host families in Manchester, visited the lakeshore hotel for their complimentary afternoon tea following an Ullswater Steamer tour from Glenridding to Aira Force where the special guests were able to explore the natural beauty of the area.
The whole day was a fantastic community event that was brilliantly organised by Patterdale’s vicar. It was wonderful to see the both the villages of Patterdale and Glenridding come together to welcome the group, with many local businesses also offering food and entertainment.

However, this is not the first time the family-owned hotel group has shown generosity toward Ukrainian refugees. Back in March 2022, Lake District Hotels successfully raised over £10,000 for Ukrainian refugees in just under a week, with all proceeds going directly to the British Red Cross Society.
“After our successful fundraising initiative that was launched to support those struggling in the Ukraine crisis, when we heard that a group of refugees would be visiting the area, it felt only right to offer them a friendly welcome in the form of a complimentary afternoon tea” – Dani Hope, Director of Lake District Hotels.
The event was organised by the Patterdale village vicar and was a warm, community event with many people and businesses in the area wanting to get involved. The group were welcomed with lots of flags and smiles.
The Inn on the Lake hotel is certainly no stranger to welcoming VIP guests for afternoon tea and even hosted the Duke & Duchess of Cambridge back in 2019 who enjoyed the sumptuous spread in the privacy of a Lake View Feature bedroom.
Afternoon teas are served daily at the Inn on the Lake from 2:30pm-5pm in the stylish lounges and panoramic Orangery. To book a table, call 017684 82444 or click here to book online.
