From September’s lingering summer days to December’s festive glow, there’s no single version of autumn in the Lake District. It’s a season of changing leaves and crisp mornings, mist drifting across the fells and reflections shimmering on the lakes. Footpaths become quieter, the air feels fresher, and after a day exploring, there’s nothing better than returning to a cosy restaurant, warming up beside a roaring fire and and comfy bed before doing it all over again the following day.
Whether you’re exploring Keswick, Borrowdale or Ullswater, autumn brings a different kind of magic to the Lake District. So wherever your day takes you, there’s always a warm welcome waiting for you with Lake District Hotels.
5 Reasons to Visit the Lake District this Autumn
1. The Weather
Autumn in the Lake District can be surprisingly dry, with cooler temperatures, golden leaves, and clear night skies, which is what makes the season of the best times to visit.
Monthly Temperatures:
- September – Daytime ranges from 10°C to 15°C, with nighttime dropping to 8°C to 11°C.
- October – Daytime ranges from 8°C to 12°C, with cooler nights falling to 4°C to 7°C (and more rain).
- November – Daytime cools further to 5°C to 9°C, and nighttime drops to 2°C to 4°C.
What to Expect:
- Quieter crowds – Summer tourist numbers drop once schools are back, making it a quieter time for fell walking and exploring Keswick.
- Scenery – Picture the fells and valley coated in rich shades of gold, orange, and red. Mornings can see the crowd inversions settling over the fells on those cooler mornings. As the nights get darker and longer, make the most of crisp, clear nights for Dark Skies Tourism. Early November signals the start of our Christmas decorations, they are worth the visit alone!
- Packing – Autumn in the Lake District means the weather can change at the drop of a hat, so packing waterproof jackets, practical footwear, and layers you can adjust depending on the temperature.
2. Outdoor Activities
Autumn is home to some of the most exciting outdoor activities in the Lake District. From gentle walks, to adrenaline-fueled adventures, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Walking – There are some incredible walking routes to be found in the Lake District, from the orange-coloured fells, to the damp woodland paths of Derwentwater, to spotting red squirrels in Whinlatter Forest.
