These are rewarding Lakeland fell walks designed for guests who enjoy a good day on the hills. Each route covers around 8–9 miles with steady ascents, making this break best suited to reasonably fit walkers who are comfortable spending several hours exploring the fells.

Your Walking Break Itinerary

Sunday 10 May – Arrival & Welcome

  • 3pm check-in
  • Tea and homemade scones 
  • Time to settle in and meet fellow walkers

Monday 11 May – Castle Crag, High Spy & Maiden Moor: A Classic Borrowdale Fell Walk

  • Full Cumbrian breakfast with continental buffet
  • Guided walk departing from the hotel
The first day’s adventure explores some of Borrowdale’s most iconic fells. The route begins by crossing the Chinese Bridge (water levels permitting) before heading towards the distinctive summit of Castle Crag, a wonderful viewpoint rising from the valley floor.
From here the path climbs towards the col between Dale Head and High Spy via Tongue Gill, where the remains of historic mining workings offer a fascinating glimpse into the valley’s industrial past.
The route continues north across the airy ridges of High Spy and Maiden Moor, offering sweeping views across the Borrowdale valley and Derwentwater, before descending via the col between High Spy and Catbells and returning through Manesty back to the hotel.

        - Ascent: Approximately 2,300ft

Tuesday 12 May – Bleaberry Fell & Walla Crag: Lakeland Views and Lakeshore Paths

  • Full Cumbrian breakfast with continental buffet
  • Guided walk departing from the hotel
Today’s walk offers one of the most rewarding days out in the northern Lake District. Setting off from the hotel, the route climbs gently behind the valley towards Lodore, before continuing towards Ashness Bridge, where the iconic Surprise View reveals a breathtaking panorama across Derwentwater and the surrounding fells.
From here the route rises onto Bleaberry Fell, where expansive views stretch across the Borrowdale valley and deep into the Lakeland landscape. The walk then continues across to Walla Crag, a magnificent natural viewpoint overlooking the lake below.
The return journey loops through the ancient woodland of Great Wood, before following the lakeshore path along Derwentwater, offering a peaceful and scenic finale back to the hotel.

Guest Booking Terms & Conditions

These Terms & Conditions apply to all bookings for The Borrowdale Hotel Guided Walking Break which includes accommodation at The Borrowdale Hotel and participation in guided walks led by Trekking Tom. By confirming your booking, you agree to the terms below.

1. Your Contract
Your accommodation booking is with The Borrowdale Hotel. The guided walk(s) included in the break are operated and delivered by Trekking Tom, an independent, qualified and insured Mountain Leader. Trekking Tom operates as an independent contractor and not as an employee, agent, or partner of The Borrowdale Hotel.

2. Guided Walk Provider
All guided walks are:
· Planned and led by Trekking Tom
· Subject to his professional judgement regarding weather, terrain and group ability
· Covered by his own Public Liability Insurance

The Borrowdale Hotel does not supervise, control, or manage the walk itself and accepts no responsibility for the conduct of the guided activity.

3. Assumption of Risk
Participation in fell walking and outdoor activities involves inherent risks, including but not limited to:
· Slips, trips and falls
· Changing weather conditions
· Uneven or difficult terrain
· Remote locations

By choosing to participate, guests acknowledge and accept these risks. Participation is voluntary.

4. Health, Fitness & Walk Requirements
The guided walks included in this break typically cover 8–9 miles per day and involve total ascents of approximately 2,000 feet or more over uneven Lakeland fell terrain. Participation is therefore suitable only for reasonably fit walkers who are comfortable walking for several hours and managing sustained ascents and descents.

Guests are responsible for ensuring that they:
· Are medically fit to participate
· Disclose any relevant medical conditions to Trekking Tom prior to arrival at the hotel – this can be done via hotel communications
· Wear suitable walking clothing and footwear
· Bring appropriate equipment as advised

The Borrowdale Hotel and Trekking Tom reserve the right to refuse participation where, in their professional judgement, a guest is not adequately prepared, suitably equipped, or fit to undertake the walk. No refund will be given in such circumstances.

5. Route Changes & Weather
Safety is paramount. Trekking Tom reserves the right to:
· Alter routes
· Adjust distances
· Shorten or cancel walks
· Change the planned itinerary

This may be due to weather, ground conditions, group ability, or safety considerations.

No compensation will be payable for changes made in the interests of safety.

6. Liability
The Borrowdale Hotel accepts no liability for:
· Injury, loss or damage sustained during participation in guided walks
· Loss or damage to personal belongings during the walk
· Any act or omission of Trekking Tom in the provision of the guided activity
Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, or any liability which cannot be excluded under UK law.

Trekking Tom remains responsible for the safe delivery of the guided walk in accordance with his professional obligations and insurance.

7. Insurance
Guests are strongly advised to have appropriate personal travel insurance that covers:
· Walking activities
· Personal injury
· Cancellation
· Loss of personal belongings

8. Cancellation by the Guest
Standard hotel cancellation terms apply to the accommodation element of your booking.
If you cancel:
· Within the permitted cancellation window: no charge
· Outside the cancellation window: charges may apply as per hotel policy
If the walking element cannot proceed due to guest cancellation, no separate refund will be made unless otherwise agreed.

9. Cancellation by the Guide
If Trekking Tom cancels a walk due to illness, unsafe weather, or unforeseen circumstances:
· An alternative stay may be offered
· If no alternative can be arranged, a refund of the break will be provided

10. Behaviour
Guests are expected to:
· Follow the instructions of Trekking Tom at all times
· Respect the countryside and adhere to the Countryside Code
· Act in a manner that does not endanger themselves or others
Failure to do so may result in removal from the activity without refund.

11. Data Protection
Personal information may be shared with Trekking Tom for the purposes of delivering the guided walk. All data will be handled in accordance with UK data protection legislation.
