Tour de France 2027 Lake District

In July 2027, the world’s most iconic cycling race, Tour de France, will return to the UK! This time it’s set to pass through the rolling hills and breathtaking landscapes of Cumbria — including right here in Keswick.

The newly revealed route begins in Edinburgh on 2 July 2027. The Grand Départ of the men’s race will head south through Carlisle before taking in one of the most scenic stages: a route starting in Keswick right through the heart of the Lake District.

When does Tour de France 2027 start?

Friday 2 July 2027.

What is the Grand Départ?

When will the Tour de France pass through Keswick?

Keswick will take centre stage for the second leg of the race as riders will set off from Keswick on Saturday, the 3rd of July! From there, the peloton will sweep past Thirlmere, Grasmere, Rydal Water and Windermere, skirting the edge of Morecambe Bay before heading into Lancashire.

How long is the UK part of the Tour de France 2027?

The UK stages of the Tour de France 2027 will take place over three days. After starting in the UK, the men’s race will travel south to finish in Liverpool on the same day as the Lake District stage, before the third stage runs from Welshpool to Cardiff. Across the three days, riders will cover approximately 630km, after which the race will return to France by plane to continue the Tour.

Where should I stay to experience the Tour de France in Cumbria?

Staying in or around Keswick offers easy access to the race route, local celebrations and the wider Lake District. You’ll also avoid race-day travel disruptions and enjoy a comfortable base before and after the crowds.

With the riders starting the second stage from Keswick on Saturday, the town will be at the centre of the Tour de France buzz, creating an incredible atmosphere as the Tour de France gets underway.

A Once-in-a-Generation Event for Keswick and Cumbria

When the Tour de France last visited the UK in 2014, around five million spectators lined the roads to watch the race pass through. In 2027, organisers expect even larger crowds for what’s being described as the largest free sporting spectacle in UK history.

It will also be the first time both the men’s and women’s Tour de France races start in the same country outside of France, placing the UK — and Cumbria — firmly in the global spotlight.

For locals and visitors alike, this is a rare opportunity to experience world-class cycling against one of the most iconic Lake District landscapes.
