We’re pleased to announce Blood Bikes Cumbria as our chosen charity for 2017. Towards the end of last year we reached out to the general public to nominate their favourite charity and received a fantastic response with over 600 entries. A large percentage of the nominations were in favour of Blood Bikes Cumbria, here’s a few that really made them stand out from the crowd;
– They provide a vital service delivering blood between Cumbrian hospitals, ensuring the hospitals receive their supplies rapidly. They also save the NHS £1,000s in delivery costs.
– As well as helping the NHS, they also supply the Great North Air Ambulance with fresh blood, every day of the week regardless of weather conditions.
– Without charities like this blood and soft tissue may not get to outlying areas in time. This is a valuable resource run by volunteers.
Blood Bikes Cumbria, is part of a nationwide organization that provides out-of-hours transport, 365 days of the year to transport urgently needed blood, drugs, human tissue and other medical requirements between hospitals and blood transfusion banks. The charity was set up to save the NHS money which was being spent using public taxi services to provide this service.
Rod Wickham, Rider & Liaison Officer for Blood Bikes Cumbria, commented, “We are delighted to have been chosen by Lake District Hotels as their charity of the year. Our riders, drivers, controllers and fundraisers work together to provide this vital service for the people of Cumbria. To have the support from the Lake District Hotels group will give a huge boost to the morale of our volunteers and also much needed funds to allow us to continue. We look forward to working together during the year.”
The Cumbrian area is 1 of the 48 groups within the organisation and is made up of a team of 90 volunteers, 7 bikes and 4 cars, who run independently following the National Association of Blood Bikes guide lines. All riders are required to have an advanced motorcycle riding qualification, car drivers require an advanced driving qualification, any new riders and drivers must shadow an experienced member and are only allowed to work on their own when they fully understand the procedures and their mentor is satisfied.
